👋 University of birmingham

📚 About the club

The 93% Club Birmingham are a society dedicated to empowering and supporting state-school educated students. We are passionate for increasing opportunities for all students, regardless of socioeconomic background.

Previously, our events included a 'Personal Brand Workshop' in partnership with HSBC, focused on the importance and development of your personal identity, as well as a 'National Commercial Awareness Competition' in collaboration with The University of Law, with lots of fun prizes up for grabs!

We certainly aim to take a similar path, providing workshops and panels to support students' awareness of available career opportunities, aid their development, and also provide fun socials that you definitely do not want to miss out on!

I'm so excited to create a supportive community to empower students and make a truly positive impact. We have lots of exciting ideas in the pipelines for professional and social events, and would love for you to join us on our journey!

👋 University of Bristol

📚 About the club

The 93% Club Bristol was the very first 93% Club, founded by Sophie Pender in 2016.

Since then, we have hosted a wide range of events catered to the needs and wants of our members. From discussions with leading social mobility academics and journalists such as Lee Elliot Major, Sam Friedman and Robert Verkaik, to multi-round commercial awareness competitions in collaboration with the University of Law where the winner received a place on UoL and Legal Cheek’s Virtual Winter Vacation Scheme.

Last year, we achieved a silver accreditation through the Bristol SU; but this year, we’re going for gold! We have transformed our already vast mentorship scheme to include more industries, such as theoretical physics and engineering. Our aim this year is to bring in more industry professionals from even more industries into the scheme. We can’t wait to welcome you — see you at Freshers Fair!

💬 Hear from the club president

Hi! I’m Jasmine, incoming President of the 93% Club Bristol!

Bristol was the first 93% Club to exist, and remains an outreach beacon for the students of the University of Bristol.

We are hoping to recruit new members this year; our eventual aim being for all state educated students at the University of Bristol to gain access to the 93% Club’s resources.

We are looking forward to meeting new members, hosting more industry panels, and would like to deliver more outreach projects across the Bristol community.

👋 University of Cambridge

📚 About the club

We are The 93% Club Cambridge, and have been around for roughly 4 years now. We're a tight-knit community amplifying and representing the needs and voices of state-educated students within the Cambridge student body.

It can be hard at times! Nonetheless, we've made a supportive environment which is free from discussion of ski seasons and AGAs.

The society does all sorts, over the last few years we've put on careers applications workshops and networking events with companies such as Accenture and McKinsey. We take it further than just careers, though.

Some of our other events have included chairing the Cambridge Union discussion forum on 'Being Working Class at Cambridge' and holding a talk with journalist Robert Verkaik (author of 'Posh Boys'). And of course, down-time is equally as important, too: we put on tote bag painting, hold welfare teas, and go out for dessert here and there.

The 93% Cambridge is incredibly chilled: the vast majority of our events are free to join and don't require signing up in advance. So give us a follow and drop in! We look forward to meeting you in October.

👋 Cardiff university

📚 About the club

We are the 93% Club Cardiff. Founded in 2021 by Bhavdeep Bola and Charlotte Griffin, we have been supporting state educated students in Cardiff for the last three years.

In that time, we have held many wonderful events such as workshops on how to best use LinkedIn, pies for Pi Day, internship panels and even hosted a movie night watching and laughing at ‘Harrow: A Very British School.’ We were shortlisted for the Society of the Year awards in 2022 and 2023, and won the Bronze Award in the 2022 Society and Volunteering Awards.

💬 Hear from the club president

Hi! I’m Alicja, I was the Welfare Officer on the founding committee of 93% Club Cardiff and now am very excited to be President of the Society this year!

I am most excited to open up the Club to more subject areas such as STEM (being a Chemistry student myself), and also enhance the already incredible opportunities that the 93% Club has to offer by bringing the focus more on getting your foot in the door internationally.

We have many exciting events in the works, I can’t wait to see you all there!”

- Alicja Gasior, President, Cardiff University

👋 Durham university

📚 About the club

Despite only 7% of the population being privately educated, around 40% of students at Durham attended a fee-paying school. Therefore, we have worked extremely hard to create an environment that is both welcoming and supportive for state educated students.

As a result of this, we received the Growth and Outreach award for 2021-22 academic year and the Durham 93% Club has grown to be one of the biggest with just over 1000 members and 2000 social media followers.

This year we introduced a mentorship scheme for first year students, hosted a networking event with the Newcastle club, and introduced the student employability fund which allowed us to provide 3 students with financial support for their professional development.

We have also hosted a number of Q&As, application tips sessions, welfare drop ins at each college, socials with subsidised drinks and trips to the cat cafe and cinema. We are proud of what we have achieved and can't wait to roll out our plans for the upcoming academic year!

💬 Hear from the club president

Hi everyone, I'm Freya, the President for the Durham club this year. We have big plans in store for 2023-24 , and I am especially excited to re-launch our mentorship scheme and plan lots of career sessions so that everyone can learn a bit more about different sectors.

We had a very successful year last year and are planning to continue putting our passion into practice to ensure that all state educated Durham students feel welcome and supported.

The 93% Club Durham is somewhere to grow and learn but also relax and meet new people. After all, we are a friendly community of bright minds and should take advantage of that!

- Freya West, President, Durham University

👋 University of edinburgh

📚 About the club

We are the 93% Club Edinburgh! We were founded in 2020 and are now one of the biggest 93% Clubs in the UK. We work hard to represent and support not only Scottish students but state-educated students from everywhere! We have three aims as a club:

  • Firstly, we want to support your professional development! Privately educated students will often have had skills sessions at schools to help them with CV writing, LinkedIn, interviews and so much more. We want to make sure that state school students have access to the same information, so through our connections with careers services, companies and organisations we aim to bring those skills to you!

  • Secondly, we aim to live up to the Club part of our name! At our heart, we are here to be a community. So we organise regular fun, affordable and accessible social events that bring students from similar backgrounds together and create a safe space for everyone to share their lived experiences.

  • Our third and final aim is what makes the 93% Club Edinburgh unique, we aim to campaign for change! This can include a change in student experience or a change in university policy.

For the last two years, we have run a successful State School Proud campaign. This gave state school students a chance to record their experiences and use our platform to share these experiences with the wider university community so more people were aware of the challenges they have faced and overcome.

We will be continuing to campaign this year as we want to ensure future generations of state school students, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities and outcomes while at university.

💬 Hear from the club president

It is an honour and a privilege to be President of the 93% Club at Edinburgh Uni. I am so excited to be running this club with a wonderful and dedicated committee alongside me. The thing I am looking forward to most this year at the Club is the campaigning.

This year we are hoping to persuade the university into including classism and accent discrimination training for all its staff. If this were to happen we would be one of the first universities in the country to have this and it would be a massive step forward in ensuring that staff have adequate knowledge and students have fewer negative experiences.

I strongly believe that state-educated students have worked so hard to be here, and they should be so proud of themselves for overcoming all the obstacles they have faced. I hope they can have pride in knowing they overcame all of that to be here.

As a state-educated student, you may feel like you don't fit in, but I promise that is not the case. You deserve to fit in wherever you want to fit in. You shouldn't have to change the way you look, the way you sound or what you think and feel to fit in. And if you can't fit in then loudly and proudly turn up and tell them to deal with it.”

- Grace Mai Clark, President, University of Edinburgh

👋 University of Manchester

📚 About the club

The 93% Club Manchester was established as a society in 2020. After a few months of existence, we were awarded both the Bright Network Society’s Impact on Campus Award and the Opportunities for All Award at the National Society Awards for the 2019/2020 academic year.

Our society provides valuable opportunities to future leaders, thinkers, and pioneers that have been victims of the deficits and failures of the British state-school system. We have incredible opportunities for growth being based at one of the UK’s largest and most commercially successful student unions, with 45,000+ students.

Last year, we were privileged to encourage attendance to the national club’s Level Up event, held in Manchester. We can’t wait to expand our member base and provide you with fulfilling social and educational opportunities throughout this year.

💬 Hear from the club president

We’re so excited to welcome new members to our club. Our primary goals for this year are providing not just academic events and opportunities, but also focusing on the social isolation state-school students can face whilst studying at traditionally elite universities.

I’m extremely excited to be working on developing a platform for state-educated students to upskill, network and connect with each other this year, and would love to send a warm invitation to incoming first-year students to join our branch of the largest network of state-school students in the country

- Matilda Thorley, President, University of Manchester

👋 Newcastle University

📚 About the club

The 93% Club Newcastle was founded during the pandemic; beginning as a small society, we have grown rapidly over the last two years through collaborations with nearby clubs and outreach efforts on campus.

Now, we are a thriving community that has partnered with leading firms across many different sectors to try to bring as many opportunities to state-educated students on campus. We have also been working on having a tangible impact on the University itself, working with staff to put social mobility on their agenda when developing their Access to Participation Plan.

There is much more to come, but we hope that anyone coming to Newcastle University this year will come along and help us build an ever-expanding network for state-educated members.

💬 Hear from the club president

I’m really excited to continue the great work of the 93% Newcastle by building the state school community at Newcastle! I’m looking forward to this year's networking event to give students an insight to their dream jobs.”

- Isaac Biddle, President, Newcastle University

👋 Northeastern university london

📚 About the club

Our Club at NU London was founded after the original committee noticed a disparity between those privately educated and those who attended state schools - we wanted a safe space for students that belong to the latter and that's where the 93% Club came in!

We've run one event since being set up which was a little presentation on social mobility which we catered some drinks and food for. Since then, a new committee has come in and we have big plans!

We want to work with other 93% Club's in London, work with Professional Employers and have some Speaker Events with other societies at our University. As part of Northeastern's global network, we are passionate about entrepreneurship and we want to find a way to incorporate social mobility and accessibility in that realm.

We are serious about social mobility and proud of our State School education, and you will fit right in! We look forward to working with you over the next academic year, and help provide a professional insight into the modern working world and a society that you belong to.

- Neve Hargreaves, President, Northeastern University London

👋 University of Nottingham

📚 About the club

The 93% Club Nottingham was founded in 2020, during the pandemic.

Our biggest event last year was running an insight day exclusively for state school educated students at the Morgan Lewis London Office. We had over 50 applications which were reviewed by Morgan Lewis. Using the sponsorship funds from this partnership, we ensured the transportation of 18 of our members from Nottingham to London, to keep the opportunity accessible.

We ran an industry focused school outreach programme in which UoN Law & Medicine students went into local state schools, colleges and sixth forms to help, inspire and advise aspiring doctors and lawyers by providing an insight into University life and aiding with LNAT/UCAT preparation. Next year we hope to expand this into more fields such as STEM and finance.

💬 Hear from the club president

My aim this year is to bring in more employer-focused events and cater to even more students - including neurodiverse students and international students who do not receive sufficient support.
